Maricopa County’s top prosecutor has dismissed all remaining charges against a disabled black man who was beaten and taped by a Phoenix police officer during his August arrest.
The Democrat currently running against County Attorney Rachel Mitchell says her opponents had to be publicly shamed to take action.
The U.S. Department of Justice said Phoenix police were excessively violent and discriminated against people of color and people with disabilities.
Mitchell was urged to consider charges against Phoenix police who arrested Tyrone McAlpin.
Another option for local prosecutors is to ask the Arizona U.S. Attorney’s Office to pursue a criminal and civil rights case against the officers.
“That’s something I would very strongly like to think about. Let’s do it,” said Tamika Wooten, who will play against Mitchell.
Wooten added that federal prosecutors likely saw the video of McAlpin’s arrest.
“And I’m confident they know what the right thing to do is,” Wooten said.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said it was aware of the incident involving McAlpin, but had no further comment.
“I don’t understand why it took a week (for Mitchell to dismiss the remaining charges against McAlpin). And why it took the NAACP, and why it took until she was like, ‘Oh, let me shoot.’ I don’t understand why we needed national and national news. Please do something,” Wooten said.
