Kingman – Fundraising, advertising, recruitment, community integration and other activities are laying the groundwork for the summer 2024 debut of the Mojave Community College Bighorn Football Program.
The formation of the men’s and women’s soccer teams marks the MCC’s first foray into intercollegiate athletics. The Bighorn Athletics Booster Club will host a charity tournament at his Laughlin Ranch golf course in early June and another Bighorn Scramble his golf fundraiser on May 20 at Kingman’s Serbat Cliffs Course. It has been.
Camilo Valencia oversees the MCC athletic department as he prepares for his first season as head coach of the men’s soccer team. He travels to El Paso, Dallas, Texas, Las Vegas, Phoenix and California to scout for football talent and future student-athletes.
Cynthia Cervantes will coach the Bighorn women’s soccer team, and she’s also playing. She and Varenica are planning youth soccer camps in Kingman and Bullhead City this summer.
The MCC will not begin playing in the National Junior College Athletic Association until August 2024. Valencia said rules restrict the university from signing student football players to the program until November this year.
Valencia said the tristate region has a solid talent for youth football. He said there is no doubt that locals will play for MCC in the future, but that scouting and talent acquisition efforts go far beyond the region.
“We’re looking for players from everywhere. It doesn’t matter if they’re from Arizona, Nevada, Mississippi, or outside the United States,” Valencia said. There will also be players from outside the region. ”
Valencia noted a wealth of international talent at two-time national champion Arizona Western Community College. He said the success of the Yuma-based university will help motivate MCC to pursue its own excellence.
Valencia and Cervantes will teach soccer skills at upcoming MCC soccer camps in Kingman and Bullhead City.
“At camp, we focus on small side games (games with a limited number of players, such as 3-on-3 or 5-on-5), where you can have fun while interacting with other players and develop individual skills such as passing, receiving, shooting, and dribbling. We will train you to improve,” said the MCC news release.
Kingman Camp will take place June 19-21 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Kingman High School soccer field (4182 N. Bank St.) for boys and girls ages 5 to 12.
Bullhead Camp will be held July 24-26 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Rotary Park soccer field at 2315 Balboa Doctor for boys and girls ages 5 to 12.
