Last Saturday night at Mojave Valley Raceway in Arizona, Eddie Tafoya Jr. got the start of the final USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series, heading to Texas and Ohio at the end of the month. The 25-year-old rising star set his third-fastest time in qualifying that night and came home 12thth 30 laps of the main event.
Chino Hills, Calif. resident Tafoya was one of 30 cars to compete in the first sprint car race held at the “Copper State” racing facility since last October. In front of a large crowd, he got off to a good start, posting his lap of 14.219, his third fastest time of the night and qualifying for his third heat of his race.
Being the fastest car in the heat meant he started at 6th in 10 wrappers. The affable driver got into a fierce dogfight over the third he was able to win. Not only did he win the battle for third place, but he almost took second place from him on the line.
With qualifying and heat race results, 2019 USAC/CRA ‘Rookie of the Year’ and 2018 PAS Young Gun Sprint Car Champion Tafoya started fifth in the 30-lap A main. In the first few laps, the 25-year-old kept the beautiful #51T in the top five. However, he stopped in Turn 1 after dropping back to his eighth place on his fourth lap. This caused the yellow flag to be presented and racing activity to be suspended.
Tafoya was the cause of the yellow so I had to go back for the restart. In his final 25 laps he passed more cars on the track than any other driver and finished 12th.th.
Despite not scoring points in the 2023 USAC/CRA Series, Tafoya is 13 years old.th in championship standings. He is very high in his standings despite the fact that he has only fought two of his first four races.
Tafoya won’t be racing for the next two weeks as the team prepares to race the USAC National Sprint Cars at Rocket Raceway and Devils Bowl Speedway in Texas from April 27-29. Then the team’s rig heads. Heading northeast for his two-day race at Eldora Speedway on May 5th and 6th.
