Mother Arrested After Firing Shots at North Carolina Fair
A mother from North Carolina was taken into custody on Saturday for discharging a firearm at a back-to-school event while attempting to intervene in a fight between her son and another boy, as reported by WBTV.
Cherez Davis allegedly fired two shots to break up the altercation around 1:10 PM at a trade fair hosted at the new medical site of CW Williams Community Health Center. An affidavit mentions that the confrontation escalated when another adult tried to help, prompting Davis to draw her weapon. The scene quickly became chaotic, with more than 100 people fleeing in panic, according to the report.
Some attendees reportedly ran into traffic on a nearby busy road as police responded. There was initial confusion when officers were mistaken for ICE agents during the incident, as noted by the Charlotte Observer. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, confirmed by WBTV.
Records from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office indicate that Davis faced charges for carrying a concealed weapon and instilling fear in others. She was later released on a $50,000 bond.
Vendor Laura Newell, who was present at the event, expressed her shock over the incident. “I was really shaking. I’m sure a lot of people were. There was a lot of fuss. We heard screams, and people were running. It was pretty confusing, pretty crazy,” she shared.
The CW Williams Community Health Center released a statement regarding the occurrence. They described the gunfire as an isolated event that happened toward the end of the gathering. “We are saddened that our community, our vendors, and team members had to go through this, but we are grateful that no one was harmed,” the center stated.
They also praised their team for their courage in managing the situation. The annual event typically offers vaccinations, physical check-ups, and free school supplies to students, as highlighted by the Charlotte Observer.
