Montgomery Mayor Discusses Crime with Governor
Montgomery Mayor Stephen Reed shared that he had a productive discussion with Governor Kay Ivey regarding strategies to tackle crime in the city, particularly in light of recent incidents involving gun violence.
“Thank you, Governor Kay Ivey. Montgomery is committed to playing its part in addressing crime and collaborating to create stronger, safer communities,” Reed conveyed.
Following a recent shooting that resulted in two fatalities and left twelve injured downtown, Ivey expressed a desire to keep communication open about how the state might assist.
Earlier this week, a statement from Ivey’s office suggested she attempted to reach Reed but did not receive a response. “Governor Ivey made an effort to contact Mayor Reed on Monday to extend assistance. While the Mayor didn’t return the call, she did leave a voicemail inquiring about how she could help,” claimed Ivey’s spokesperson, Gina Maiola.
Reed, however, refuted this account. “Please stop lying! No one called me,” he stated unequivocally, criticizing the governor’s staff for allegedly politicizing a tragic situation.
Despite this back-and-forth, the two finally engaged in a phone conversation on Wednesday. “I’m glad we connected,” Reed said, while Ivey reiterated her commitment to supporting local efforts in the fight against crime.
Ivey has announced an increase in ALEA patrols among other initiatives aimed at ensuring safety for both residents and visitors in Montgomery.
Reed mentioned ongoing collaboration with various Alabama agencies involved in the investigation, emphasizing a united effort with federal, state, and local law enforcement as well as community partners. “We’re working with every agency possible, aiming to make this city safer,” he remarked.
