More records in jeopardy | News

Today marks the 39th day in a row that Tucson has had temperatures over 100 degrees Celsius. The record is 39 days, and I’m on track to break it tomorrow…

Saturday afternoon tied the record for consecutive temperatures above 110 degrees Celsius. The record was set for eight days in 2021 and will be set again in 2023. The weather continued to be severe last week, with temperatures still soaring to around 106 degrees Celsius even yesterday. Temperatures will range from 106 degrees to 114 degrees in parts of southeastern Arizona this afternoon, and Tucson will experience 39 consecutive days of temperatures above 100 degrees. This afternoon it tied the three previous records (1987, 2005 and 2013) for the most consecutive days above 100 degrees Celsius, and will break that record tomorrow afternoon.

The excessive heat warning for low-elevation counties in Pima, Pinal, Graham and Greenlee counties has been extended again until 10 p.m. Wednesday. This unprecedented heat poses the greatest threat to all of southeastern Arizona, so remember to drink plenty of water, check before you lock your doors, and limit your time outdoors to between 10am and 8pm.

Storms are most likely to form this afternoon south and west of Tucson. The best coverage is in Santa Cruz County, where storms begin to form in the early afternoon. The storm will then move west through the Midwest Pima County this afternoon. Strong to severe storms can occur in isolation, with wind damage, blown dust and localized heavy rains remaining the main threats. The extent of the storm varies from day to day, but it looks like it will be more extensive this weekend. Watch out for rainstorms!
