More than half of voters believe private businesses have the right to dismiss individuals who praise assassination online.

Survey Reveals Voter Opinions on Firing Employees for Online Celebrations

A recent poll indicates that more than half of voters believe it’s acceptable for private companies to terminate employees, like conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, who celebrated an assassination online.

According to a release from Neapolitan News Service, 51% of respondents think it’s justified to dismiss employees who publicly celebrate such events. The survey pointed out that this kind of behavior isn’t one that private firms would typically condone.

The results show a stark contrast between political affiliations. A significant 88% of Republicans support firing reporters or civil servants for celebrating online, whereas only 34% of Democrats agree with that stance. Interestingly, about 73% of individuals who engage in political discussions nearly every day think the same way about dismissing celebratory behavior online.

Many academic institutions and organizations have already let go of employees who mocked or laughed at Kirk’s assassination on social media. In the aftermath of his death, several well-known figures have also issued apologies for their remarks.

For context, Kirk was shot and killed on September 10th. The individual accused of his murder is said to have been living with a partner who identifies as transgender. Reports include phrases shouted before the shooting, such as “Hey fascist! Catch!” followed by “If you read this, you’re a gay lmao.”
