More Voters Deciding They’d Rather Be Called Anything But A Democrat

A new NBC News analysis shows that as they suffer one of the sharp declines in voter affiliation over the decades, the growing share of Americans is abandoning Democrats.

Democrat registration numbers have declined almost every year since 2000, but analysis has been found except during former President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. The analysis shows Republicans have also seen a decline, which has fallen from 32.8% to 30.9% since 2000. In contrast, independence and third-party affiliations increased from 23.4% to 32%.

“Participants need to do more than win the next election. They need to build a structure for the future,” Christopher Cooper, a professor of political science at Western Carolina University in North Carolina, told NBC News. “They don’t tell people why memberships have that privilege, I think they need to recognize this.

Additionally, a May poll by the Associated Press shows that only about a third of Democrats are “very optimistic” or “somewhat optimistic” about the party’s future. Another survey recently found that 62% of Democrats believe that party leadership should be replaced by a new face.

The DNC is facing a severe internal conflict and a sharp decline in donations, with some party officials reportedly considering borrowing to keep their money. The leadership conflict was highlighted by the recent ouster of former DNC vice-chairman David Hogg – which further destabilized party unity.
