Morgan Murphy, a former aide to U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) and most recently part of the White House staff, is gearing up to announce his candidacy for Alabama’s open U.S. Senate seat at a Birmingham event tonight. This detail was reported by USA TODAY.
At 53, Murphy, who serves as a captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve, has gained recognition as the first candidate to significantly support Tuberville during his push against the Pentagon’s abortion travel policy while working in his office.
He left his role in White House public diplomacy last week just prior to this announcement.
Murphy expressed, “I feel like President Trump’s agenda is what I’m called to engage with, as it’s the first political movement I’ve encountered that really resonates with me,” he recalled saying to USA TODAY.
He noted that Trump seeks a “common-sense approach to government.” Murphy emphasized that his involvement isn’t just for the short term—it’s about a broader commitment.
“Both President Trump and Coach Tuberville expect excellence at every level,” he stated. “I’m proud of my work for both, and I aim to continue advocating for their vision in the U.S. Senate for the years ahead.”
Murphy’s background spans both media and national security. Previously, he served as a news director for former Acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller and held a senior fellow position at the America First Policy Institute, adding to his roles in the White House and the State Department.
He conveyed to USA TODAY that he had informed the White House about his plans and had discussions with Tuberville.
“The president tends to back those who show potential. I’m looking to demonstrate my support before asking for his endorsement,” he mentioned.
This upcoming 2026 Senate race in Alabama could see significant influence from President Trump’s backing.
Murphy is now joining a group of candidates that include U.S. Representative Barry Moore (R-Enterprise), Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, and former U.S. Navy Seal Jared Hudson.
On his campaign website, Murphy outlines a platform that builds upon Trump’s “America First” principles and “coach values” for the U.S. Senate.
