On Saturday night, a group of three 20-somethings in black ties walked past me at the Capitol. They were probably on their way to one of President-elect Donald Trump’s celebrations in Washington, D.C., this weekend.
“Hello, Republicans!” I yelled.
“What made you let it go?” They laughed.
This week, Washington, D.C., was filled with bright, happy faces. Grand Old Party is here. What a great party that was! On the eve of Trump’s inauguration, Democrats face an entirely new world of governance and a new environment in Washington, D.C.
The scary thing is that Republicans are in control, with the White House, Senate, House of Representatives, and Supreme Court all under conservative control. Even Donald Trump won Popularity vote. Thousands of MAGA believers are flooding into the capital.
On the other hand, the Democratic Party is like a rain cloud looking for a ray of hope.
In December, there was a glimmer of hope that Republicans would trigger a government shutdown. Failing this, Democrats tried to create a rift between Trump and Elon Musk, but to no avail. On January 3, they watched in dismay as Louisiana Republican Rep. Mike Johnson secured re-election as the 56th Speaker of the House.
The thunder continued. On January 6, Vice President Kamala Harris certified her opponent’s victory as an elated Speaker Johnson carefully suppressed his obvious glee. January 9th, former President Barack Obama and President Trump We talked Like an old friend who attended former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral.
The remnants of the left know that on January 20th there will be a maelstrom of liberal cries. To show they are doing something, Trump and his MAGA army need to win, however small, before they pull back the reins of power.
The victory appeared to derail President Trump’s nominee to lead the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth. So this week they focused their efforts on defeating the Princeton University graduate and decorated military veteran who appeared before the Senate Armed Services Committee on January 14th. They shot the wad. And missed.
Having observed hundreds of such meetings, I watched Hegseth’s performance with interest. If Democrats have any new information or new accusations, it will be revealed in a heated hearing.
However, no new information emerged.
Democrats launched personal attacks. Hegseth drank too much at parties, courted women, and even went to a strip club. Oh, that’s scary. Can you imagine a soldier coming back from deployment being able to do that?
Most members of the Senate Armed Services Committee have apparently never been near a military base, nearly all of which are surrounded by car dealerships, Hooters, and bars.
The Democrats’ main strategy seemed to be to rehash these personal slurs, but to say them louder and with more venom. Many just seemed shrill, rather than forceful and commanding. The result was the internet. comedy goldthis meme has been viewed by 4.8 million people as of this writing (probably exponentially more than the number of people who actually watched the hearing itself).
But the biggest faceplant unexpectedly came from Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Normally a gifted interrogator, she promoted Hegseth to the rank of general. Hegseth grinned mischievously and replied, “I’m not a general,” and the audience erupted in laughter. others immediately piled up And it was over.
The Democratic Party has become a laughing stock, and its best chance to overturn President Trump’s nomination is gone. Not only is Hegseth likely to be confirmed, but given his experience in the field as a platoon leader, the new defense secretary clears the way for the rest of Trump’s Cabinet to navigate the hurdles.
