Humphreys Peak may be Arizona’s tallest mountain, but Humphreys Peak isn’t the only mountain worth climbing.
Doyle Peak is the fifth highest mountain in the state and soars to an impressive height of about 11,500 feet. This is just 1,000 feet from Humphreys with the added bonus of being far less crowded.
Located near Flagstaff within the Coconino National Forest, the mountain is accessible via the Inner Basin Trail, best known for its beautiful golden-turning poplar trees in the fall.

…and in the spring, the soil bursts with stunning wildflowers in all colors of the rainbow.
The version of the trail leading up to Doyle Peak is about 7.7 miles long and increases elevation by 2,000 feet. Sure, it’s challenging, but the view that awaits you at the end makes every ounce of that effort worth it.
As you look up into the forest canopy, you will be in awe. It’s like looking through a kaleidoscope!
The biodiversity is also incredible. Only a few types of mushrooms are seen, but each one looks more unique than the previous one.
Finally, after hours of pushing yourself to the limit, you’ll be rewarded in the best possible way.
