‘Most Bizarre Animal Encounter’: Giraffe Spotted With Rare Deformity

During a wildlife tour in South Africa, a photographer captured a giraffe with a “very twisted” neck, calling it a “bizarre” sight.

Travel blogger Lynn Scott took this photo. Facebook “The strangest animal encounter I've ever seen,” Scott captioned the post on July 5. He discovered the giraffe with a rare deformity while touring Kruger National Park, where he previously worked. according to Live Science.

“It just stood there motionless at the time,” Scott told the outlet, reportedly adding that the creature “was barely moving.”

Scott reportedly did not reveal the exact location or date he found the giraffe in order to protect it from poachers.

“His neck is definitely quite twisted,” Sarah Ferguson, veterinarian and conservation health coordinator for the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, told the outlet.

“Without X-rays to prove there are broken bones, we would assume this giraffe has severe torticollis,” she told the outlet.

Torticollis is a condition in which the neck twists and the head turns, tilting at an odd angle. according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. The exact cause of the disease is unknown, but it can affect both humans and animals.

Johns Hopkins University notes that the condition can be present at birth, but can also develop later in life for a variety of reasons, including a herniated disc, sleeping in an awkward position, or infection.

Commenters on the Facebook post questioned whether the giraffe had broken its neck during a fight with a fellow giraffe.
