Mother detained, girl located in Cottonwood following initial Turquoise Alert

Cottonwood, Arizona – Police Locate Missing Girl

Authorities successfully found a 6-year-old girl from Hawaii, who had been the subject of Arizona’s first turquoise alert. The alert was issued after she was taken by someone who wasn’t her mother.

This situation escalated on Wednesday evening when the girl was reportedly photographed by Sarakurtas, violating court orders. The two were eventually located at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport on July 12.

According to a sister station in Arizona, there were initial inquiries regarding custody interference that involved the Hawaii Police Department. Around 11:30 PM, the FBI informed the Cottonwood Police Department about the possibility of the mother and daughter being in the area. By approximately 1 AM Thursday, officials spotted them at a women’s shelter.

Police confirmed that the young girl was found safe and asleep. She is currently in the care of the Arizona Department of Child Safety (DCS).

The girl’s mother has been taken into custody and is awaiting extradition back to Hawaii.

Colonel Jeffrey Glover, from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, remarked, “In this case, the system worked as intended. We appreciate the teamwork and commitment of everyone involved in ensuring Violet’s safe recovery.”

Criteria for Turquoise Alerts

The new alert system outlines several criteria that law enforcement must meet:

  • Missing individuals must be under the age of 65.
  • The agency conducting the search should have exhausted all other local resources.
  • The individual is missing under unclear or suspicious circumstances.
  • There are indicators that the missing person may be at risk or connected to potentially dangerous individuals.
  • Public assistance may be necessary for the safe recovery of the missing person.
