Motorcyclist killed in crash near Maricopa

According to the police department, the accident occurred around 3 a.m. after a police officer tried to stop the motorcycle.

MARICOPA, Ariz. — A motorcycle driver was killed Thursday morning near Maricopa. Initial reports said they were fleeing from city police when they collided.

Around 3 a.m., officers attempted to pull over a motorcyclist on John Wayne Parkway. Police said the driver initially stopped, but appears to have sped off at a “high rate of speed” before the road closure ended.

The motorcyclist traveled on John Wayne Parkway before colliding near Alterra Parkway. First responders pronounced them dead at the scene of the crash.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office is assisting with the investigation and a portion of the road was closed to traffic.

The identity of the motorcyclist has not been released at this time.
