MSNBC’s Charlie Sykes Says Gov. Tim Walz ‘Reads Moderate’ Despite His Far-Left Policy Record

MSNBC's Charlie Sykes said Wednesday that voters won't criticize Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz's far-left policy record because he “offers a moderate voice” and “talks like a regular guy.”

Sykes began by expressing disappointment that primary candidate Kamala Harris had chosen Walz as her running mate over Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, arguing that voters would identify with Walz's “moderate” appearance rather than his policy record as governor.

“I'll admit that I was initially surprised and disappointed by the choice,” Sykes told “Morning Joe.” “I thought Josh Shapiro was the more obvious choice. Waltz is more undecided.” [to be determined]Governors can have a hard time scaling up, and I think it's really important that this candidate appeals and reaches out to moderate voters. We're so used to thinking about this in ideological terms, but maybe it's going to be something else. Maybe it's going to be about personality and perceptions, not policies.”

“Judging by his record and the vibe he gives off, he may have a very progressive record of governing, but he's a moderate and he speaks more like a regular person than a politician, so he will be well-received locally,” Sykes continued.

Sykes argued that Walz will speak to white voters, rural voters and moderate Republicans who are “moving away” from Republican candidate Donald Trump, and that the Minnesota governor's personality and the energy of the crowd at Tuesday's rally with Harris and Walz were typical of the enthusiasm we see as the November election approaches.

“This enthusiasm isn't speculation, it's real, and I'm very interested to see how it plays out here,” he added.

Walz has a history of leaning to the left during his term as governor. On March 8, 2023, he signed an executive order that would allow anyone, including minors, to have access to gender reassignment surgery and hormone treatments, and would prohibit Minnesota from assisting other states in arresting people suspected of violating their state's gender reassignment laws.
