MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki Claims Harris Provides ‘More Paths For Democrats’ To Win

MSNBC reporter Steve Kornacki said Friday that Vice President Kamala Harris had a better chance than President Joe Biden of securing the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidential election.

Harris accepted the Democratic presidential nomination on Thursday, more than a month after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. Approved Kornacki said Harris' leads over Biden among black, Hispanic and young voters gave her a chance to challenge former President Donald Trump in North Carolina, Nevada and Arizona. “When Joe Biden was dropping out of the race, the polls were showing him underperforming Donald Trump by an average of three points. Now that Kamala Harris has been the new Democratic candidate for about a month, she's up by two points on average. So we've gone from underperforming by three points to overperforming by two points,” Kornacki told MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell. “What's behind Harris' advance in the polls? There are three groups in particular where she's outperforming Biden exceptionally, and those are the voters where Biden has lagged behind. Among black voters, Harris is outperforming Biden by an average of eight points. Among Hispanic voters, she's outperforming Biden by 10 points. Among younger voters under 30, Harris is outperforming Biden by two points.” [is] That's 11 points ahead of Biden.”

Trump received 17% support from black voters in a CBS poll release On Sunday, 26% of the black vote on Fox News vote release That's far higher than the 12% he received from black voters in a CNN poll conducted on August 14. Exit polls In 2020, a Morning Consult poll found that more than one in five black voters supported Trump. According to To Newsweek.

“What does that mean for the road map to 270, which we're going to be coming back to a lot between now and November?” Kornacki said.

Kornacki noted that Harris' rise in support has led to an increase in the number of battleground states.

“In North Carolina, Democrats have been talking about making it a battleground state all year. They said that when Biden was the nominee, but now that Harris is the nominee and North Carolina polls are showing improvement with black support, some polls are showing it's a close race in North Carolina, maybe with Harris leading slightly, all of a sudden they can make North Carolina a battleground state,” Kornacki said.

Kornacki said Harris's rise among Hispanic voters will also have an impact in states such as Arizona and Nevada.

“When Joe Biden was the nominee, the Democrats had a really narrow window of opportunity. Biden had to win, they had to win Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, and if they won those three states they would have exactly 270 electoral votes. They don't have a sliver of wiggle room. They have to win all three states,” Kornacki added.

“But given Harris and the demographic improvements for her and the potential, real potential wins in Nevada, Arizona and North Carolina, it may take some of the pressure off Harris and the Democrats in the Great Lakes and Big Ten states and open up a path to the Sun Belt. Now that Harris has been the Democratic nominee for a month, it could open up even more of a path for Democrats. We'll see how it plays out from here once the convention is over and the real general election starts. Will it continue? Will Trump move forward? But for now it opens up even more of a path for Democrats,” Kornacki said.
