Elon Musk announced Thursday that the Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE) aims to achieve federal savings of $150 billion in fiscal year 2026.
Musk First projected Doge offers $2 trillion in savings by targeting government waste, fraud and abuse. That figure was halved to $1 trillion earlier this year, but Musk returned again at Cabinet meeting Thursday. “We look forward to announce that we expect savings in 2026, with waste reductions and $150 billion cuts in FY2026,” Musk said. “And some of it is ridiculous, like people who have unemployment insurance that they haven’t yet been born. I mean, I think anyone can be grateful. I mean, it’s just crazy.”

The announcement is the latest in a series of revised forecasts from the mask that has become the face of President Donald Trump’s aggressive federal efficiency agenda.
“Your people are wonderful,” replied the president. “In fact, hopefully, they’ll stay for a long time. I want to keep as much as I can. They’re great – be smart, sharp, find something nobody thought of.”
Musk originally brought a $2 trillion figure to the foreground during his appearance on the campaign last fall.
“I think we can make at least $2 trillion,” Musk said. I said At the Madison Square Garden Campaign Rally in November. “After all, you’re taxed. All government spending is taxed… your money is wasted, and government efficiency fixes it.”
By January, he had calmed expectations for a “really very achievable” $1 trillion target before slashing that number again this week.
“Our goal is to cut the deficit by $1 trillion,” Musk said in Fox News’ Fox News’ “Bret Baier “seeing federal spending, we’ll cut our spending between $7 trillion to $6 trillion by eliminating waste, fraud and abuse.”
