MVP Candidate Joel Embiid’s Knee Injury Places Award, 76ers’ Title Hopes In Jeopardy

Philadelphia 76ers MVP Joel Embiid has suffered a torn meniscus and will be out for an undisclosed amount of time, the team announced.

“An MRI after Wednesday's game and further testing over the past 24 hours revealed a torn lateral meniscus in Embiid's left knee,” the 76ers said in a statement. according to Go to Yahoo News. “Embiid will remain sidelined through the weekend until a treatment plan is finalized in consultation with the 76ers medical staff and several leading experts.”

The injury appears to have occurred Wednesday night when Embiid tangled with Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga.

The Athletic's NBA insider Shams Charania initially reported that Embiid had torn his meniscus, but later retracted that statement, writing, “To clarify a previous tweet, the team has not officially acknowledged the tear. Joel Embiid has said he will be out through the weekend for treatment. The plan is complete. ”

Embiid put up MVP numbers in Philadelphia, leading the league in points per game with 35.3 points and adding 11.8 rebounds per game, good for sixth in the league. Before the season, the league stipulated that players must appear in at least 65 of their team's 82 games to win major awards such as MVP. Embiid has already missed 13 games and can only afford to miss four more before the season ends.
