Pelosi Comments on Alcatraz Reopening
California Rep. Nancy Pelosi recently remarked to Scripps News that a certain individual might be a strong contender for becoming an Alcatraz prisoner.
Nathaniel Reed, a congressional correspondent for Scripps News, inquired about the possibility of reopening old California prisons, specifically Alcatraz. He asked, “Based on what you know, how long will it take to refill Alcatraz to be suitable for prisoners?”
Pelosi responded, “Well, that depends on the number of prisoners they think they’ll put there.”
She then referenced Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile to Elba, mentioning it in a light-hearted way, suggesting that she doesn’t believe it will happen for many prisoners.
Shifting gears, Pelosi asked Reid if he had visited Alcatraz, to which he replied affirmatively. “So you wouldn’t want to live there as a prisoner, right?” she quipped. The video didn’t capture his response clearly, as she seemed to anticipate what he might say.
With a smile, she joked about his potential as a candidate for one of those cells.
In a recent MSNBC interview, Pelosi criticized President Donald Trump’s idea of reopening Alcatraz, calling it “the stupidest idea this administration has proposed.”
President Trump mentioned back in July that plans were underway for the prison’s conceptual work to begin, stating, “Various prison companies are considering doing it with us.” He made a call for the prison to be rebuilt on May 4, highlighting concerns about violent offenders in society.
Trump emphasized that reopening Alcatraz would symbolize law, order, and justice. He also indicated collaboration with the Department of Justice, the FBI, and the Department of Homeland Security to expand its operation and house the nation’s most dangerous criminals.
