Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will be the main fundraiser for Rep. Ruben Gallego, who hopes to win the seat for incumbent Senator Kirsten Cinema in 2024.

Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb is currently the only prominent Republican running for the party’s nomination, while unsuccessful 2022 gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake has hinted at running. Cinema Arizona has yet to announce its 2024 candidacy, but the prospect of a three-way race could create room for Republicans to cross the necessary narrow threshold to elect a Republican senator.
Cinema spokesman Pablo Sierra-Carmona said cinema continues to focus on other priorities.

“Cinema is plummeting, donors are defecting to Gallego, and iconic and influential Democratic Party leaders like Nancy Pelosi are rallying to elect a true Democrat in Arizona. No wonder,” she said.
California Democrat Pelosi, who has yet to formally endorse Gallego, has had little involvement in the primary.
The only time Pelosi has interfered in a Senate election so far is the battle for the succession of veteran Senator Diane Feinstein (D-California). Pelosi endorsed recently impeached Rep. Adam Schiff (Democrat of California).
Pelosi and cinema have long kept their distance. Cinema voted against Pelosi as Speaker of the House in 2015, when he was a congressman. Both she and Gallego opposed Pelosi’s efforts to become House Minority Leader in 2016.
Cinema, then a Democrat, told the Arizona Republic newspaper that he was “deeply disappointed” by the party’s decision to keep him a member.
“During multiple election cycles, House Democrats have failed to win many of these tough seats across the country,” she recalled. She added, “They are struggling to win and keep seats. Frankly, the caucus strategy is not working.”
