While Oats' arrival in Boston seems like a mystery at first glance, it makes a lot more sense when you consider the fact that one of his former players, J.D. Davison, is actually still with the team despite only appearing in eight games this season.
Although he didn't play many minutes, Davison became the first Alabama player of the Nate Oats era to receive an NBA championship ring.
Maybe Oats brought Boston luck, as the Celtics were able to close out the Finals and take the series, 4-1, after losing Game 4 in Dallas.
