In May 2022, the NCAA announced it would allow schools to play in one end-of-season event, similar to the NIT in college basketball. By July 2022, the first National Golf Invitational will golf week and Ak-Chin Southern Dunes and golf week Lance Ringler, Invitational Tournament Director.The committee decided on invite-only fields using both golf week/Sagarin and Golfstat rankings, while also considering the teams that performed well in the regular season.
Since its opening in 2002, Ak-Chin Southern Dunes has hosted numerous major tournaments and events, serving as a qualifying venue for the annual US Open and the PGA Tour’s Korn Ferry Tour Q-School. It serves as the host venue for 1 stage and as the venue for the boy’s councils of several top universities. There are also women’s golf tournaments, including his two-day Ryder Cup-style event, the Copper Cup, which features the men’s golf teams of in-state rivals the University of Arizona and Arizona State. Additionally, the course hosts the Desert Amateur in December each year and the Top Amateur in Saguaro Amateur in early January. Both events are part of the Troon Saguaro Amateur Series, a multi-tournament series open to high-level amateurs year-round.
In 2026, Actin Southern Dunes Golf Club will host the Men’s Golf NCAA Regional. The “Top 100 You Can Play” golf course will be one of his six regional sites in the United States, with each site featuring 14 college teams. The top five teams from each region will advance to the 2026 NCAA Championship at La Costa Resort and Spa in San Diego, California. The exact dates for the Actin Southern Dunes region will be announced at a later date, but the tournament is expected to take place in mid-to-late May 2026.
Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club was designed in 2002 by Brian Curley and PGA Tour veteran Fred Couples. Originally developed as a private club by private investors, the championship Australian Sandbelt style golf course sits on 320 acres of land that was once part of it. Part of his May 1912 reservation in Actin, before being removed by a presidential decree in late 1912. Almost 100 years later, in 2010, the Actin community reclaimed the sacred grounds by purchasing golf facilities and opening the course to the public.
