National Weather Service releases flood updates in Arizona for Tonto Creek and Salt River

Central Arizona residents should exercise caution as flooding is likely to occur over the next few days.

That’s according to the National Weather Service, which provided an update on Sunday’s flooding in Gila County’s Tonto Creek and the valley along the Salt River between the Granite Reef Dam and Tempe Town Lake.

Gabriel Lojero is a meteorologist at the agency in Phoenix.

“You don’t know how deep the water is, so don’t cross where it’s flowing. You’d better turn around and find another route,” he said.

According to Lojero, one of the reasons the floods occurred near Salt River was because the SRP wanted to prevent snowmelt from overflowing the dam.

Flood warnings remain in place throughout the week, with a higher chance of rain on Wednesday.

Northern Arizona is also expected to see increased runoff with rain over the weekend and temperatures soaring to the high 40s and low 50s in Flagstaff.

Flood warnings have also been issued for parts of southern Nevada, including along the Meadow Valley Wash in Lincoln County near the Utah line southwest of Spring Valley State Park and northeast of Pioche.

In New Mexico, rain and snow are expected to continue to spread through the northern and central parts of the state. According to the service, several inches of snow can be expected on peaks above 9,000 feet.

Low humidity, gusty winds, and above-average temperatures could trigger fires in eastern New Mexico and parts of the Rio Grande Valley.
