Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs on Friday ordered the National Guard to the southern border, but not all area residents are participating.
The Tohono O'odham Nation, a Native American tribe that borders part of the southern border in the Tucson area, wrote in a letter that it does not want troops deployed along that part of the border.
“We are in close contact with Governor Hobbs on this issue. We made it clear, and her office agreed, that we would not deploy the National Guard. Today’s action by the governor is a necessary step to address the current crisis at our border,” National Chairman Barlon Jose said in a statement Friday.
But Jose added that the federal government needs to take responsibility for the migrant surge and other immigration issues.
“Ultimately, a comprehensive border solution is a federal issue. Congress must act to pass sensible immigration legislation. Congress also requires CBP to address the temporary migrant surge. We need to allocate the necessary resources. Unless we take these common-sense steps, our communities will continue to be affected by border issues.”
Fox news' Bill Melgin reported that the country does not have a wall with Mexico and can sometimes handle the entry of more than 1,000 migrants each day, according to the National Border Patrol Council.
The unit is intended to assist state and local governments, including the Arizona Department of Public Safety, which is already stationed in the Tucson area following the closure of the Lukeville Port of Entry by Customs and Border Protection.
With more than 18,000 arrests across the sector by CBP in the past two weeks, authorities have refocused resources on the migrant surge rather than Lukeville's legal entry point.
“Once again, the federal government is refusing to do its job of securing our borders and keeping our communities safe,” Hobbs said in a statement Friday. center square report.
“With this executive order, I am taking actions that the federal government would not do. But we cannot be isolated. We need resources and manpower to maintain a humane border. Despite continued requests for assistance, the Biden administration has refused to provide desperately needed resources to the Arizona border. ” she continued.
Hobbs originally said that when CBP first announced the Lukeville closure, local officials did not request additional assistance. center square report.
