Netflix Promises An Animated Ghostbusters Series

Netflix has greenlit the development of an animated series based on Ghostbusters, much to the delight of fans around the world.

The animated series based on the legendary film was first announced in 2022 and was only recently confirmed. VarietyElliot Callan has been tapped to write the series and will also serve as showrunner and executive producer, according to a source familiar with the matter. Variety reports that exact plot details have yet to be released, but sources say the new series will stick to the tone of the original.

Curran is best known as head writer for “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” where he was part of the winning team when the show was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series seven years in a row. He won a total of four times.

He later served as head writer for the Netflix revival of the hit series “Mystery Science Theater 3000” and co-hosted the “The Flop House” podcast. Curran also served as a writer for the comic book series “Spider-Man & the X-Men.”

The series will be the third “Ghostbusters” animated series in the franchise's history. According to Variety, “The Real Ghostbusters” ran for a total of 140 episodes and aired in syndication from 1986 to 1991. “Extreme Ghostbusters” followed in 1997, introducing a new lineup of characters.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife premiered in November 2021 and was a huge box office hit, grossing approximately $200 million worldwide and costing approximately $75 million to make, according to Variety.

The series is produced by Ghost Corps., Inc., a Netflix and Sony division of Columbia Pictures. (Related: Scooby-Doo to return to Netflix: Report)
