New details in Tucson pot dispensary robbery, police shooting

A new report has identified a man involved in an armed robbery at a Tucson marijuana dispensary earlier this month and the police officer who shot him dead.

Sergeant Jesse Klopowitz, a 14-year veteran of the Tucson Police Department, shot and killed Nicolas Mauro Sosa, 37, on March 14. Police said Sosa had robbed a pharmacy and robbed a nearby restaurant. .

The police department received multiple 911 calls regarding an armed robbery this afternoon at a clinic on the 2700 block of East Grant Road near North Tucson Boulevard.

Officers identified Sosa in the incident and searched the area.

Chlopowicz eventually finds Sosa at a restaurant. According to the report, Sosa pointed a gun at police officers after refusing multiple orders to go down.

Chlopowicz fired his rifle at Sosa and then sought cover, the report said.

People inside the restaurant were able to escape safely. No officers were injured.

When SWAT officers later went inside, they found Sosa dead.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the University of Arizona Police Department are conducting criminal investigations. The TPD’s Office of Professional Standards is responsible for administrative research.

Police responded to a call of an armed robbery and shooting at Block 2700 on East Grant Road shortly before 3pm Tuesday.
