Those looking to escape the summer heat by visiting the Coconino National Forest around Flagstaff may be subject to new fire regulations to prevent unwanted man-made fires.
Last week, the Flagstaff Ranger District held a community meeting to announce several proposed changes that would limit the use of camping, campfires and motorized vehicles in certain areas most at risk of devastating wildfires. .
Proposed changes include expanding the existing year-round camping and campfire ban boundaries right next to the city.

Rangers also proposed banning motorized vehicles around the San Francisco Peaks, Walnut Canyon, and Pumphouse Wash areas during Phase 2 of the fire restrictions. These areas are still open for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding use, allowing access to trailheads, snowballers, flood mitigation crews, and private landowners.
This is in addition to the existing year-round Stage 2 restrictions surrounding Flagstaff, Kachina Village, Mountainaire, Doney Park and Timberline.
San Francisco Peaks, Walnut Canyon, and Pumphouse Wash are also among the areas that will be closed under Tier 3 restrictions.
The proposed change came to fruition earlier this year with the support of the Coconino County Board of Supervisors. If accepted, the changes will be implemented by the end of April.
