New fire restrictions could come to Coconino National Forest

Those looking to escape the summer heat by visiting the Coconino National Forest around Flagstaff may be subject to new fire regulations to prevent unwanted man-made fires.

Last week, the Flagstaff Ranger District held a community meeting to announce several proposed changes that would limit the use of camping, campfires and motorized vehicles in certain areas most at risk of devastating wildfires. .

Proposed changes include expanding the existing year-round camping and campfire ban boundaries right next to the city.

The Flagstaff Ranger District is proposing to expand the area covered by year-round camping and campfire restrictions in Coconino National Forest around the city.

Rangers also proposed banning motorized vehicles around the San Francisco Peaks, Walnut Canyon, and Pumphouse Wash areas during Phase 2 of the fire restrictions. These areas are still open for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding use, allowing access to trailheads, snowballers, flood mitigation crews, and private landowners.
