Last weekend, a new food truck park, Comida Parkopened to add to the fray.

Comida Park still needs some finishing touches like turning on the lights for the site.

Comida Park is a collection of 21 food trucks organized by United Flea Market, a Denver, Colorado-based company that acquired Tank Verde Swap Meet in 2019. Maintain a diverse set of options.

The roster now includes my favorite banh mi shop on the north side, a pastry and barbecue truck with a cult following at Sahuarita, a grilled cheese passion project from the head chef of Dante’s Fire, Ppseria, and my favorite Mediterranean food truck. I’m here.

Homemade Mediterranean is a Lebanese food truck that specializes in sandwiches. My favorite is the Garlic Chicken His sandwich, wrapped in a flatbread called manakish (the Lebanese answer to pita). I first tried their food when they were stationed at Pit, a food truck park on the east side.

The pit ran into zoning problems because the city of Tucson’s food truck regulations do not allow trucks to congregate within 100 feet at all times. Propane tank explosions are rare, but rules are in place to ensure that freak accidents don’t become exponentially more damaging.

However, Comida Park is outside the city limits. 4100 S. Palo Verde Road, in Pima County. The county regulates food trucks. For example, food trucks need hot running water and must contract with concession kitchens to keep hot food fresh. .

Comida Park officially opened on February 10th. As we visited on a Friday afternoon, you may have noticed that there were very few trucks parked at the Comida Park parking lot. But by Saturday afternoon, at least 15 were powered on and ready for service.

Parks may look very different from the renderings you see on news sites and social media. When I visited, the air was thick with the smell of cooking strawberry kettle corn and generator smoke.

Many food trucks use generators and extension cords. This is because the electricity hasn’t turned on yet and won’t turn on for at least a week or two. Rough terrain and trip hazards such as loose cords, utility connections and outlets may be present.

Admission to the Tank Verde Swap Meet (including Comida Park) is free Sunday-Thursday and Friday-Saturday from 8 AM to 3 PM. Admission is $1 Friday and Saturday from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM. Comida Park is open Monday through Thursday from 8 AM to 8 PM, Friday through Saturday from 8 AM to 11:30 PM, and Sunday from 8 AM to 10 PM.

Comida Park’s full roster of food trucks includes 21 vendors. If you’re interested in a particular facility, check the hours of operation before you go. Not all trucks are there when the park is open. If you go there, you will find something like this:
