A man accused of stabbing three people to death in New York City is out on bail and had been arrested eight times before the assault, city officials said.
The suspect, 51-year-old Ramon Rivera, a homeless Hispanic man, was arrested Monday for the “unprovoked” stabbing within three hours. He was also arrested in Hudson County, New Jersey, where he was charged with theft, robbery and criminal mischief three times, according to NBC New York. A spokesperson for the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office told NBC New York that he was released before trial under New Jersey’s 2017 Criminal Justice Reform Act, which allows for pretrial release without cash bail. The first victim, identified as Angel Lata Lundy, a 36-year-old man, was stabbed without warning near Manhattan’s Chelsea borough at 8:22 a.m. Monday morning, after being taken to NYPD Bellevue Hospital. At 10:25 a.m., Rivera stabbed the next victim, an unidentified 68-year-old Asian man, who was fishing near the East River, New York City police told DCNF. The victim was pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital after being transported by paramedics.
Finally, Rivera stabbed 36-year-old Wilma Augustine multiple times at 10:55 a.m. outside the United Nations building, the NYPD told DCNF. She was in critical condition upon arrival at Weill Cornell Medical Center, but ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
New York City police arrested Rivera near the Turkish mission to the United Nations, city officials said. At the time of his arrest, the man’s clothes and two knives were covered in blood.
The NYPD provided names and additional incident information, but did not provide any additional comment on the incident to the DCNF.
