A couple were indicted Thursday for the first time in three years on charges of murdering their wife’s ex-husband, according to the Southern District of Justice in New York (SDNYDJ).
Nicholas Orsini and Jamie Orsini are said to have planned and executed meticulously. According to SDNYDJ, Steven Kraft was killed press release. Their plan allegedly involved not only the murder itself, but also the disposal of Kraft’s car and an effort to cover up his tracks, according to the release. “Their alleged plan was sophisticated. It included the use of mobile phones, theft and dumping of Kraft’s car, and ultimately the disposal of Kraft’s body.” US attorney Damien Williams said. “In doing so, the Orsini family has denied the dignity of a proper burial to the Kraft family, including Kraft and Jamie’s children.”
According to a press release, preparations began days before the murder, with the Orsinis purchasing items with cash, including paint sheets, duct tape, a Tyvek suit, boots and a burner phone. They recreated the route they would later take to dispose of Kraft’s car, allegedly doing a “dry run” from his home in Beacon, New York to Newburgh, New York.
The Orsini family is said to have carried out their deed car jack A murder plot on April 28, 2020, according to SDNYDJ. Kraft went to the Orsini mansion to pick up the children that afternoon, but mysteriously disappeared. Nicholas Orsini then drove Kraft’s car along the same route used in the dry run, according to a press release. According to SDNYDJ, Nicolas Orsini called a taxi to pick him up after getting out of the car and disposed of the burner phone.
In the aftermath of the crime, the Orsinis allegedly worked together to cover up their actions. They reportedly got new phones, changed their numbers multiple times, and made many short trips to Amsterdam, New York, where Nicholas Orsini’s relatives are. They then purchased equipment to process the bodies, the statement said.
Nicolas Orsini allegedly texted his mother asking if he had told anyone about his visit. He also allegedly purchased items from Home Depot, including galvanized steel round trash cans, stainless steel rods, angle grinders, metal discs, charcoal grate, axes, and lighters.
“Today’s indictment demonstrates our continued commitment to our communities. The FBI will ensure that those involved in such horrific violence are held accountable in the criminal justice system. I think it would,” said FBI Assistant Secretary of State Michael J. Driscoll.
The couple have been charged with carjacking homicide and one count of conspiracy.
