The City of Flagstaff Office of Sustainability and Sustainability Commission is pleased to announce this year’s Neighborhood Sustainability Grant recipients. The Neighborhood Sustainability Grant Program is an annual grant opportunity for Flagstaff individuals, organizations, and businesses to implement continuing or new neighborhood sustainability projects. This year, 13 of the 31 applicants received grants ranging from $2,150 to $7,500.
Below are examples of 2023 grant winners.
- Flagstaff Community Assistance Team (CAT) is expanding its People at Work (PAW) program to help unemployed and unsheltered relatives learn skills and generate income by turning construction waste into salable items. Provides an opportunity to gain.
- Flagstaff Community Market purchases leftover wholesale food from local food producers after the Sunday Community Market and supplies needed produce to the local nonprofit Flagstaff Family Food Center.
- Thaddeus Cates and The Factory will establish a permaculture community garden and educational space in southeast Flagstaff.
- Restoration Soils provides high-value compost from our industrial composting facility for use in community and school gardens.
- Flagstaff Shelter Service's bicycle program installs bicycle racks in Crown stores and provides bicycle education to customers.
- Flagstaff Family Food Center will reduce food waste from the FFFC kitchen through composting and provide educational workshop opportunities for the community.
- Lily of the Field will continue to host Saturday community markets on the Eastside.
- Flagstaff Junior Academy plans to create an educational garden for students and community members on its new campus.
- Northland Hospice & Palliative Care plans to expand its gardens and add a pollinator garden to provide hospice patients with natural space and healthy fresh food.
- Alexi Kimatek will partner with City Parks Recreation, Open Space and Events and Beautification to establish an accessible community orchard at Bushmaster Park.

A sustainability committee made up of seven Flagstaff-based volunteers reviewed the applications and scored them based on established grant guidelines and scoring rubrics. Applications typically close in September of each year. Through more than 10 years of grants, the City of Flagstaff has funded 63 projects.
