News Flash • Attacker Gets Three Consecutive Life Sentences

[Corrected Version]

(Phoenix, AZ) – Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced three life sentences without the possibility of release for Brandon Michael Lujan (DOB: January 1987), who was convicted of murdering his parents and siblings in their downtown Phoenix home in June.

The deadly attack occurred in 2021. Phoenix police were called to a local hospital after Lujan revealed to staff that he had killed his family the night before. Police say Lujan first shot his brother, then entered the home and began firing at his parents. Lujan fired multiple times and had to stop the barrage to reload his gun.

Lujan's two young daughters were in his car on the day of the murder, and one of them heard their father say, “I'm going to kill them.” [all]” followed by gunshots and screams coming from the house.

During the investigation, police learned that Lujan and his wife, Layleen Roest, had recently been evicted from Lujan's family home. Roest had been driving with Lujan to the family home on the day of the murder. Roest was sentenced to three years in prison.

Lujan was convicted of first-degree murder, three counts of a first-degree felony endangering another and a domestic violence charge.

“Such a planned, cold-blooded murder of a family and showing no remorse shows a profound lack of humanity,” County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said. “I thank our prosecutors for their work to ensure this dangerous individual will never be released.”

At the sentencing, family members described the victims as kind and generous people, with one family member saying “there is a hole in our lives that will never be filled.”
