News Flash • Maricopa County Celebrates Grand Opening of 192

Early today, Maricopa County leaders gathered to celebrate the grand opening of Salt River Flats, a new 192-unit affordable housing development in South Phoenix.

“When this board invests in affordable housing solutions, we are strengthening our neighborhoods for the long term,” said Maricopa County Board of Supervisors District 1 Chairman Jack Sellers. “People need to understand: projects like this don't just provide affordable housing for residents now. These units need to remain affordable for decades to come, which means thousands, maybe tens of thousands, of people will benefit from this development in the long term.”

Maricopa County invested $3 million from federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to help fund Salt River Flats, which was developed by Ulysses Development in partnership with the Affordable Housing Institute, with construction breaking ground in October 2022. Households can apply for one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom units if they earn at or below 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI), or $61,680 for a family of four and $49,320 for a family of two.

Salt River Flats is built on more than nine acres, and each unit features walk-in closets, energy-efficient appliances, low-flow water fixtures, vinyl flooring, balconies and other amenities. The development includes a clubhouse with a full kitchen, business center, fitness center, pool, playground and accessible open space.

“Housing costs are rising and are often the largest expense many families must budget for,” said Superintendent Gallardo, District 5. “When we speak to families in District 5, they tell us how difficult it is for them to remain in their homes as the costs of everything from groceries to clothing to medical bills and other basic necessities rise. Affordable housing not only reduces the chances that a family will fall into homelessness, it also eases anxiety and provides the family with the ability to meet other needs.”

The project is the latest development to be built with ARPA funds and is part of a $500 million commitment made by Maricopa County to expand affordable housing options for its residents. For more information on affordable housing projects funded by Maricopa County, visit Maricopa.gov/Housing.
