The 2023 Controller of the Year Awards recently recognized Coconino County Treasurer Sara Benatar as the recipient of the Controller of the Year award in the government category.
Mr. Benatar has served as Coconino County Treasurer since his appointment in 2014 and was re-elected in 2016 and 2020, making him the youngest county treasurer in Arizona. She serves her county as a board member of the Arizona County Finance Association and as past president of the Arizona Association of Counties (AACo). She is an advocate for rural communities and serves her constituents by serving as Director and Treasurer of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) and President of the National Association of Hispanic County Elected Officials (NAHCO). “As County Treasurer, I work every day to ensure that all public funds are safely invested and accurately accounted for,” Benatar said. “This allows our borough to provide needed services for current and future generations. I am honored to have my work recognized by the Controllers Council with this award.”
The Controller of the Year Award is held every year. administrator councila member association and community focused on training and career development, best practice resources and information, peer interaction, and recognition for accounting and corporate finance executives.
Winners were reviewed, judged and selected from hundreds of applications based on a combination of 2023 financial performance, work history, volunteer or philanthropic activity, and academic background. Categories include small, medium, enterprise, start-up, and non-profit organizations, as well as public or private classifications.
