Democrats Reflect on November’s Defeat
After a significant loss last November, Democrats found themselves in a period of deep reflection, sifting through myriad thoughts while trying to develop a new strategy to revive their struggling party.
Amidst the turmoil, California Governor Gavin Newsom recently endorsed a surprising approach. He suggests abandoning the lofty ideals the party has traditionally held and opting instead for aggressive tactics that have long been criticized by Democrats committed to virtue.
Is it possible that the controversial technique of political gerrymandering might be the answer to countering Trump’s authoritarian tendencies? This is essentially what Newsom is proposing to California voters as part of his audacious new campaign.
In an effort to assist Texas Democrats in navigating Republican-dominated districts, Newsom aims to redraw California’s Congressional boundaries to benefit Democrats. His objective is clear: to offset Republican gains and boost his party’s influence.
This strategy is undoubtedly a risk for Newsom, one that could momentarily tarnish his political image. While the potential for long-term rewards exists, it hinges on the successful execution of this plan. The stakes are high, especially given the recent fallout from inadequate voting supplies, which has left both Newsom and his party struggling.
Newsom’s long-term objectives include aspirations for the presidency in 2028, but his reputation could be compromised by the negative perceptions associated with California—often viewed as extreme and struggling with issues like homelessness. His past mistakes, including a high-profile dinner that violated Covid-19 rules, have lingered in public memory and undermined his national standing.
The proposed gerrymandering strategy could redefine voters’ perceptions of Newsom across the nation.
Democratic strategist Stephen Mavilio suggests that while this approach could bolster Newsom’s aspirations for 2028 in a party searching for strong leadership, it remains a gamble for him and the party as a whole. “If this works out, it’s smart politics for him. If it fails, he risks serious consequences,” Mavilio remarked.
The path to gaining Congressional control in 2026 isn’t straightforward. Newsom’s proposed “Election Rigging Response Act” would momentarily set aside the legislative districts established by the state’s voter-approved Independent Constituency Change Commission.
Through this initiative, Democrats could reinforce their existing positions while targeting Republican-held seats. However, it first requires support from state legislatures and eventual approval from voters.
Should it pass, a “trigger” would mean the new map wouldn’t take effect unless Texas or another Republican-controlled state initiated its own gerrymandering efforts.
“I believe what Governor Newsom and the other Democrats are doing is essential,” commented Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin. “We can’t go into battles unprepared. We need to be fully equipped.” He emphasized that this strategy represents a shift from traditional Democratic approaches.
For Democrats like Rep. Laura Friedman (D-Glendale), who are aligning with Newsom, there are mixed feelings about sidelining their independent redistricting commitments. Still, they see the urgency in countering the current political climate. Friedman noted that grassroots responses to the proposal have been overwhelmingly positive.
“The consensus I’m hearing is that we’re ready to fight back,” she stated.
Despite California’s Democratic registration advantage, there’s no assurance of success when it comes to voting measures. In the past 20 years, California voters have opted for independent districts twice, and many might resist abandoning that principle.
Polls show that voters prefer maintaining an independent panel for drawing district lines by nearly 2:1, reflecting widespread support in the state.
However, voters should not anticipate a campaign focused on restructuring districts anytime soon. Opposition could frame the changes as a betrayal of California’s electorate, especially given the governor’s previous battle against a Republican recall campaign, during which he depicted the situation as a critical struggle against “Trumpism.”
Recent speeches have captured this sentiment, with Newsom emphasizing the need to awaken to ongoing threats. “I’m fully aware of Donald Trump’s actions and rhetoric,” he remarked at a recent rally.
Political strategist Kevin Liao relayed that discussions in his political group have escalated following Newsom’s recent maneuvers. Newsom’s online presence has shifted to mimic a style akin to Trump, making bold statements that resonate with supporters.
As Newsom has navigated tensions with Trump, his strategy has evolved, even as he seeks to maintain appeal beyond California’s borders.
In the current political landscape, it appears that Newsom is betting on his party’s willingness to adapt and fight back against the established norms. He seems ready to contend with the challenges ahead, as he puts his political future on the line.
