Alabama A&M University, the state's largest HBCU, recently received a $1.2 million donation.

The significant donation came from the John Stallworth Foundation, an organization run by the university's alumnus and NFL Hall of Famer that has awarded merit-based scholarships to outstanding students attending Alabama A&M University since 1980. Stallworth announced the gift following his speech at the 2024 commencement ceremony.

“Playing football was never my end goal,” Stallworth said. “My goal was to own my own business, and football was the vehicle I chose to get there. I earned my bachelor's degree in business administration at A&M University and went back in the offseason to get my MBA, all in preparation for achieving my dream of owning my own business.”

AAMU President Daniel Wims praised Stallworth and his wife, Flo, for their continued generosity.

“This gift from the John Stallworth Foundation is a testament to the dedication of our alumni to our institution,” said Wims. “Not only does it mean a lot to our school, it helps strengthen our brand and reputation as we continue to grow. We commend the Stallworths for their continued support and dedication to their alma mater and their foresight in ensuring educational opportunities for our students.”

Recipients of the scholarship, known as Stallworth Scholars, must meet required financial criteria and are recognized annually at the AAMU Honors Convocation as John Stallworth Foundation Endowed Scholars.
