NFL Receiver Michael Gallup Shocks Fans With Sudden Retirement

The Las Vegas Raiders placed Michael Gallup on the reserve/retired list on Tuesday, according to a report from ESPN.

Gallup, recently acquired by the Las Vegas Raiders, announced his retirement from professional football just one day before the team's first training camp practice. according to Gallup, 28, signed a one-year contract worth up to $3 million with the Raiders in April and was expected to be a front-runner to be the team's No. 3 receiver, according to ESPN.

Gallup, who played six years in the NFL, most recently with the Dallas Cowboys, had a remarkable career with 266 receptions, 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns. According to ESPN, Gallup was released on March 15, ending his tenure with the Cowboys, which freed up $9.5 million in salary cap space for the team. After injuring his ACL in late 2021, Gallup struggled to return to peak form. Despite signing a five-year, $57.5 million contract with the Cowboys in 2022, his performance after the injury did not reflect the high average of 15.5 yards per catch he had previously maintained.

His post-injury performance was 73 catches for 842 yards and six touchdowns, and while he didn't have a 100-yard game in either the 2022 or 2023 regular season, he did have a bright spot in January when he caught six passes for 103 yards in a wild-card game against the Green Bay Packers, according to ESPN. His peak season came in 2019, when he had 66 catches for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns.
