Nikki Haley, a potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate, told Fox News host Bret Baier on Tuesday that Republicans and the media should “stop complaining” about Vice President Kamala Harris avoiding press conferences.
Harris, who has been the Democratic front-runner since receiving President Joe Biden's endorsement on July 21, has yet to make any formal statements to the media after more than three weeks of campaigning. Haley said those calling on Harris to clarify her policies to the media “should take her at her word.”
“The Republican Party needs to seriously change course here,” Haley said. “First of all, the Republican Party, Donald Trump, the people here at Fox need to stop complaining that she's not being interviewed. We don't need a Kamala Harris interview.”
“I take her at her word,” Haley continued. “I take her at her word when she says she wants to raise taxes on families making over $100,000, I take her at her word when she says she wants to add a drug tax and a health care tax. I take her at her word when she says she thinks illegal immigrants should have the right to vote and a driver's license. I take her at her word when she says she wants to ban fracking and take away a ton of American jobs. I take her at her word.”
Haley stated Republicans who predicted Ms Harris would be the Democratic nominee in 2024 in February said the vice president should “stop whining” because they know she will replace Mr Biden, and said Mr Trump should campaign every day to defeat Ms Harris. “He needs to win,” Haley told the Fox News hosts, “but he needs to go out and do the job.”
Haley said that to win the election, Republicans must fight for the votes of suburban women, college-educated people, independents, moderate Republicans and conservative Democrats.
“I want this campaign to win,” Haley told Beyer, “but you don't win a campaign by talking about the size of the crowd. You don't win a campaign by talking about what race Kamala Harris is. You don't win a campaign by talking about whether she's stupid. You don't win by talking about that. The American people are smart. Treat them like smart people.”
