Young Angler Wins Fish Contest
Finn Retenberry, a nine-year-old student from Sweet Water School, has claimed victory in the Alabama Black Belt Adventure Association’s 2025 Best Fish Contest, as announced on Monday.
The association shared a heartwarming story from Finn’s family:
“It’s perfect for fourth graders who call their grandfather ‘fishing fins’,” the family mentioned. His grandfather, Ricky Alto, noted, “He would fish all day if he could.”
Finn’s mom, Lauren Alto, captured a photo of his winning catch during a July fishing trip at a friend’s pond in Tallahatta Springs, Clark County. “As soon as we arrived, Finn jumped out of the car and started casting,” Ricky said. “He doesn’t waste a moment when fishing.”
Reflecting on the trip, Finn shared, “I had so much fun, and it was quite a struggle!”
His photo of the bass garnered over 1,000 votes in the contest, well ahead of Chandra Sheehan’s picture, which received around 100 votes. As the winner, Finn was awarded a $100 gift card.
The contest aimed to celebrate the diverse fishing experiences available in the Black Belt, attracting numerous entries and thousands of online votes.
“We are truly fortunate to fish in so many lakes, streams, and rivers in the Black Belt,” said Pam Swanner, director of the Alabama Black Belt Adventure Association. “There’s nothing quite like the thrill of catching a fish, and Finn’s win reflects the enthusiasm of young anglers, among many others.”
She added, “We appreciate everyone who participated in the 2025 Best Fish Contest and joined the online voting. Congratulations to Finn for his achievement this year.”
The Alabama Black Belt region encompasses 23 counties, situated between the Appalachian hills and coastal plains.
