NJ man charged in hit-and-run of 13-year-old boy

IRVINGTON — A man has been charged with hitting and running a 13-year-old boy near a park and leaving the victim in a hospital.

O’Daniel Exima, 54, of Irvington, has been charged with leaving the scene of the Saturday morning incident and endangering an injured victim, according to the Essex County Attorney’s Office.

Police said the victim, a 13-year-old boy from Irvington, was hit around 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Block 1100 on Grover Steet. The road runs along Irvington Park and has playgrounds, playgrounds, ponds, and other family-friendly facilities.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the boy suffering from serious injuries on the street. He was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon.

Authorities did not say what kind of vehicle Exima was driving or how he was identified as the responsible driver.

State records show no previous convictions against Exima.

The Essex County Attorney’s Office is investigating.
