CNN correspondent Tom Foreman fact-checked Minnesota's Democratic governor, Tim Walz, on Wednesday after he claimed he was carrying weapons in a “war.”
Foreman appeared on CNN News Central with co-host Brianna Keilar to discuss previous allegations that Governor Walz suggested he was carrying weapons to war when speaking about gun control. Foreman said there is “no evidence” that the Democratic governor's comments are true. (Related article: Tim Walz once received an “A” rating from the NRA, then shot left)
“Governor Walz has made statements on several occasions when speaking to groups that suggest he has possessed weapons in a combat situation,” Foreman said. “As you know from my contacts with the military, and coming from a military family, I know there is a difference between being in a combat zone, being involved in times of war, and actually being in a position to be shot at. There is no evidence that Governor Walz was in a position to be shot at, and some of his statements could easily be inferred to have been so.”
“So what he said all that about gun rights is completely wrong. The campaign basically came to say, 'Look, he had a long career. He never wanted to intentionally mislead people on this,' and campaigns tend to say that. And this debate will continue, but it's an interesting debate that harkens back to past political conflicts where military personnel started attacking each other. And then you start to say, 'What is the basis of this argument? How much of it is true? What should we take from it as voters?'” Foreman concluded.
