Jonathan Turley, a legal scholar and George Washington University law professor, responded to former President Donald Trump’s unsealed indictment on Fox News on Friday.
Turley said the obstruction and false statement charges were the biggest of the 37 charges in the 49-page indictment.
“They will need witnesses to prove that the indictment is not as simple as it sounds,” he said. “It will take a lot of work.”
Mr Turley said it was unlikely that the case would be brought to trial before the election given the “wide range of witnesses”. (Related: Trump indictment unsealed)
“Then this election could be a kind of referendum on what people think about this case,” he said. “A second jury of tens of millions of Americans could effectively vote on the matter because if he were elected, he would not be able to pardon himself.” Because you can.”
Mr Turley said Mr Trump was a “counter-puncher” and tended to “bump him back”, which he said “isn’t always the best trend when it comes to dealing with classified documents”.
“Once again, there are stories here written by people who want ex-presidents deposed for life, so you have to read this indictment with that in mind,” he said. “But there seems to be some kind of pattern in some of this indictment.”
In addition to the 31 counts alleging “intentional retention of defense information,” prosecution Includes charges of “conspiracy to obstruct justice,” “concealment of a document or record,” “wrongful concealment of a document or record,” “concealment of a document in a federal investigation,” “planning to conceal,” and “falsehood” against President Trump. be statements and representations. ”
