Fox contributor Mary Katherine Hamm on Sunday pushed back against senior political analyst Juan Williams' claim that the numbers show the “economy is doing better” under a Biden-Harris administration compared to former President Donald Trump's administration.
Economist at Goldman Sachs release A memo last week suggested that an economy under Vice President Kamala Harris' administration could “only slightly boost” GDP investment, but that President Trump's plan could negatively impact growth due to “increased tariffs and tougher immigration policies.” Williams defended Goldman Sachs' response to both administrations on “Sunday Report,” but Hamm interjected that they didn't address the concerns of average Americans at the grocery store.
“The reality is, if you look at the numbers, the economy is better than it was then, so it's a matter of memory,” Williams said. “But we're talking about Goldman Sachs. They're not a left-wing organization. They're saying the economy will be better under Kamala Harris,” Williams said.
“But Mom isn't the one who buys the groceries,” Ham interjected.
Williams later slammed Trump's speech at the Economic Club of New York, saying it marred what “should have been a commanding performance.” (Related story: “Let's tell the truth”: CNN panel clashes after Biden administration official says inflation is “falling”)
“I think 88 top executives said this week, 'The economy will be stimulated and thriving under Kamala Harris,'” Williams continued. “And then this week, Trump spoke to the Economic Club of New York, which should have knocked him out in front of the wealthy because he seemed to want to say the economy is better, and instead he delivered a laundry list of words in response to a question about child care.”

“My sense is that with the jobs numbers looking good, the stock market looking good, and the Federal Reserve now in a position where it is likely to raise interest rates, no, cut interest rates, I think there will be more opportunities for Kamala Harris to say we're going to have a better future under my administration.”
Fox host Shannon Bream then walked back on Hamm's comments, saying that she is a mother herself and has heard from other mothers “what their thoughts are.”
“My view is, if it's hurting us, it's hurting other people much, much more. Even though inflation is coming down, it's hard to argue that it's not back up to the 1.9 it was at in January 2017, January 2016, during the Trump administration. This is hurting people,” Hamm said. “When you look at the job market, yes, employment is increasing, but it's mediocre at best, and it's being revised downward every month. [an] Cumulatively, that's a pretty big hit to those numbers.”
Harris faced backlash from political commentators on both sides of the aisle after she unveiled her economic plan in mid-August. She focused on a federal ban on “corporate price gouging” and aimed to lower prices at grocery stores, but critics warned that her plan could harm the economy by inflating prices and potentially creating a black market.
ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos vote Despite Harris' slight lead nationally, Americans still trust Trump more when it comes to key voting issues like the economy, inflation and immigration, according to an August poll. Trump leads Harris by nine points on handling the economy and inflation, and by 10 points on managing the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the data.
