NWS Flagstaff disseminates avalanche warnings for the first time

This winter season marks the first time the Flagstaff NWS has spread avalanche warnings.

Flagstaff, Arizona – At Avalanche Warnings are nothing new at Arizona’s highest elevations.

According to Flagstaff’s National Weather Service, State 48 records an average of 0-2 avalanche warnings per season, or about one avalanche warning each year. Avalanches don’t happen very often, but when you do that, it usually takes place in March and April. However, if snow is present, avalanches can occur later than in April.

This winter season marks the first time the Flagstaff NWS has spread avalanche warnings.

“They were previously published by the U.S. Forest Service and the Kacina Peaks Avalanche Center. This is here in the Flagstaff area… But this year we decided to team up with them. Warning, ” NWS meteorologist Megan Taylor explained.

The San Francisco Copycus backcountry is where the Flagstaff NWS spreads avalanche warnings when needed.

For meteorologists like Taylor, public safety, education and awareness are always the best mind.

“Our goal is to increase public safety and bring more audiences to this message.

For the rest of the season, NWS Flagstaff will only issue avalanche warnings. Additional information products such as avalanche clocks can add next winter season.
