The 2020 and 2022 elections came under further scrutiny after Arizona Attorney General Chris Mays announced that her office would open new investigations into the two elections. county.

Mays announced the new investigation in a statement Monday, saying it will work with county attorneys and officials to investigate threats and harassment of election officials, as well as fake election schemes that surfaced during the 2020 election.

“My office will investigate the fake electorate situation and take seriously any efforts to undermine our democracy,” Mays said in a statement.

Speaking to KNXV-TV in Phoenix, former Yavapai County recorder Leslie Hoffman said he welcomed the investigation after years of harassment following his retirement after the 2020 election.

“Election officials across the state were listening and it felt like she was taking some of these threats seriously for everyone,” she said.

“It’s a very Republican county and a Republican record holder. The other Republican candidate won by a two-to-one margin,” Hoffman said. “When I started getting threats, the sheriff’s department started patrolling around my house he did several times a day. I stopped going to the place.”

Hoffman is one of many officials who resigned after being harassed and threatened after the 2020 election.

Also part of the investigation will be an investigation into a possible fake electoral vote scheme involving former party leader Kerry Ward, state senators Jake Hoffman and Anthony Kahn. The Department of Justice is also investigating these schemes.
