Morgan County District Attorney Steve Anderson said at a press conference Friday that a grand jury returned a murder indictment against one of the four Decatur police officers involved in the shooting death of Steve Perkins. Announced.

Anderson said a grand jury decided to indict Mac Bailey Marquette for Perkins' murder following the September shooting. Marquette was also arrested by the Morgan County Sheriff's Office on Friday and booked into the Morgan County Jail with bail set at $30,000. Marquette scored a goal after 36 minutes.

“As a result of the facts and evidence presented in this case, the grand jury unanimously returned an indictment charging Mack Bailey Market with murder,” Anderson said. “Again, after considering all the facts and evidence in this case, the grand jury unanimously agreed that there were no violations of Alabama law against the other officers.”

In addition to Marquette, the other three officers included Joey Williams, Vance Summers, and Christopher Mukadam. Decatur Mayor Tab Bowling fired three employees and suspended another last month, a decision all employees have appealed.These hearings are scheduled to take place from January 30th to February 2nd.

Marquette shot and killed Perkins outside his home on September 29 after he tried to stop Perkins' car while it was being towed. Perkins initially blocked the tow truck driver from towing his car, but his driver returned with police. But security camera footage from that night shows the officers, who did not identify themselves, hid on the side of the Perkins house and across the street after arriving at the residence.

Perkins went outside and tried to stop the tow truck driver again, when police officers came from around the corner of the house. Within about a second of giving the command to Perkins, the officer fired 18 shots, killing Perkins.

Anderson said during a question-and-answer portion of the news conference that he would not publicly release the body camera footage because it could taint the jury's opinion. Anderson said he has spoken with Perkins' family and given them the option to view body camera footage.

Anderson would not comment on whether Perkins had a gun when he was shot, as that is a fact of the case. Anderson said the next step will be Marquette's arraignment and eventually a trial.

“It is my job and that of my office to prosecute this case and seek justice,” Anderson said.
