Some residents of Opelika are advocating for the removal of a street sign that honors former Miss America Mallory Hagan, citing her “divisive rhetoric” as the reason.
A petition to take down the official signs has garnered hundreds of signatures. The sign was initially established to commemorate her winning the Miss America Pageant in 2013.
The petition states, “We are concerned citizens and respectfully ask for the removal of the additional Mallory Hagan signs in Opelika and surrounding areas.”
It continues, “This individual, born here, does not represent the majority of the people in Opelika. Her divisive remarks about the character and physical appearance of deceased political figures are shameful and do not reflect the values of our community.”
Hagan had previously posted a video on her TikTok shortly after the assassination of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk, labeling him as “despicable.”
In her video, she expressed, “The notion that Charlie Kirk should remain silent about the terrible man because he was a husband and father is utterly absurd to me. Yes, he was chosen by the person he married, and yes, he was a father. But those children did not deserve to lose their father like that, being shot down in a public place.”
The petition addressing Hagan’s signs claimed they do not reflect the community’s spirit.
It said, “We need to embody the character that Hagan does not represent. We urge the removal of the signs and their replacement with language that reflects the entire Opelika community. We’ve signed in support of this change as it’s crucial for our city’s reputation.”
Earlier this year, Hagan’s video was widely shared after she advised Trump supporters on social media to avoid discussing allegations of child abuse in Bibb County. She remarked, “If you still support Donald Trump, you shouldn’t talk about those children in Bibb County.”
“If you live in Alabama and voted for Trump, I’d rather not hear your comments at all.”
