Pakistani Man Arrested For Allegedly Planning ISIS-Inspired Attack On Jews

The U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday that a 20-year-old Pakistani national had been arrested in Canada on suspicion of plotting a mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brooklyn, New York.

Mohammed Shahzeb Khan was arrested on September 4 on suspicion of planning to attack Jews on the anniversary of the Hamas attack on October 7. press releaseKhan is accused of attempting to travel from Canada, where he lives, to New York City with the intent of killing as many Jews as possible in the name of ISIS.

“The defendants are alleged to have planned a terrorist attack in New York City on or about October 7 of this year, with the specific intent of massacring as many Jewish people as possible in the name of ISIS,” Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in a press release. “The Jewish community, like every community in this country, should not have to fear that they will be the target of a hate-motivated terrorist attack.”

According to the Justice Department, Khan spread ISIS propaganda and expressed support for the terror group on social media and encrypted messaging platforms as early as November 2023. In conversations with two undercover law enforcement officers, Khan discussed forming an “actual offline organization” of ISIS supporters to target “Chabad of Israeli Jews” in the United States.

“If our plan succeeds, it will be the largest attack on the U.S. mainland since 9/11,” Khan once said, according to a press release.

According to a Justice Department press release, Khan was considering targeting New York, which has a large Jewish population, and carrying out the attack on either Memorial Day on Oct. 7 or Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement on Oct. 11.
