Pelosi Advocates for Support of Transgender Minors
On Thursday, California Representative Nancy Pelosi emphasized her commitment to supporting gender transition for minors, highlighting the need for public backing.
Kaiser Permanente, a major healthcare provider in California, recently announced a halt to gender-affirming surgeries for patients under 19, a decision that follows restrictions put in place during the Trump administration. While some custody groups have praised this move, LGBTQ advocates have raised concerns. Pelosi expressed her determination to continue advocating for transgender issues on Capitol Hill, particularly in light of California’s recent suspension of sex change procedures.
“I work at the national level to affirm gender for trans kids,” Pelosi stated, reflecting on the challenges faced. “It’s disappointing. I’m unsure how we can make significant impacts from the White House and Congress. It’s quite disheartening.” She further pointed out that her office proudly displays a transgender flag outside its doors.
“There’s a trans flag outside the door of our council office building, just like many of my colleagues,” Pelosi noted. “However, that perspective isn’t always shared across the aisle.”
Kaiser’s policy change aligns with President Trump’s Executive Order 14,187, which aims to protect children from certain medical procedures. This order directs federal agencies to suspend any support for those under 19 regarding gender transition. In addition, it calls for an update of care standards based on guidance from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).
Moreover, federal enforcement has been ramped up. In June, the FBI initiated investigations into several hospitals, including Boston Children’s Hospital and Colorado Children’s Hospital, over potential violations related to gender change surgeries on minors. The Attorney General has instructed the State Attorney General to pursue such cases under federal law.
A recent leak from a private WPATH forum showed discussions about tactics for advocating irreversible gender changes among “developmentally delayed” young adults and pressuring parents to consent to these procedures for their children.
