The Department of Defense is establishing a large military buffer zone in southern Texas in accordance with the presidential order to enhance border security.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegses led the creation of a new military buffer zone (officially known as the Defense Region) that covers approximately 250 miles along the Rio Grande River in Hidalgo and Cameron counties. According to the Air Force, the new buffer zone will be considered an expansion of a joint base in San Antonio. The land was previously administered by the International Boundary Water Commission, the agency responsible for the application of the water sharing agreement between Mexico and the United States.
“Under the directions of USNORTHCOM, the Joint Task Force South Border (JTF-SB) service members will be [the military buffer zone]said the Air Force press release.

“Their responsibilities include increased detection and surveillance through fixed locations and mobile patrols, signs to temporarily detain intruders until they are transferred to appropriate law enforcement, assist in the establishment of temporary barriers, and secure the area,” the statement continued.
According to the Air Force, military personnel in the area are ready to install fencing “quickly” and will remain on standby to carry out security operations.
The Pentagon directive will be in Lockstep on April 11th by President Donald Trump Presidential Order The title “Military Mission to Seal the Southern Borders of the United States and Repel Invasions” calls for military resources to secure the Southern Borders. The Department of Defense has already designated New Mexico’s 170-mile military buffer zone in April and West Texas’ 63-mile zone in the following month.
Since taking office, Trump has taken major steps to control the former choolick southern borders, issuing executive orders and slates of executive orders to reduce illegal immigration. Such actions include a national emergency declaration that will allow him to divert more military resources to the southern border, prioritize wall construction and designate drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations.
The president also successfully forced both Mexican and Canadian governments to do more to strengthen border security, including the commitment of 10,000 National Guard forces from Mexican President Claudia Sinbaum to stop the flow of illegal immigration and illegal drugs.
Border data shows that the Trump administration’s efforts are paying off.
Border Patrol agents encountered a total of 8,725 illegal immigrants crossing the southern border between ports of entry in May. According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This number fell 93% from the 117,905 illegal immigrant encounters in May 2024.
The huge decline in encounters effectively abolished the abolition of “catch and release.” This has led to a process in which overloaded detention facilities are forced to free illegal immigrants and create space for new arrivals. According to the CBP, not one illegal immigrant was released to the United States in May. This is a monumental change from the 62,000 illegal immigrants released to the country in May 2024 under President Joe Biden.
